Employee Onboarding: What Is Onboarding, And What Types Of Onboarding?
Importance of employee onboarding
Onboarding is the term used to describe how a company approaches recruiting new employees.
Onboarding programs are different and unique depending on the size and industry of the business.
In general, onboarding consists of three parts -
- Recruitment
- Orientation
- and induction/training.
These steps often take place over a period of time. Depending on the type of onboarding program, the first step may take place after the employee accepts the offer, while others require the employee to start at their new position before being introduced to everything about the company.
Each stage serves a specific purpose, although they can overlap each other.
Recruitment: Recruitment involves companies searching for qualified candidates to fill open positions.
Many times recruiters will hire based on referrals from current employees. Companies look for characteristics that align well with their culture and values.
Once a candidate is hired, the recruiter works closely with them throughout their employment to ensure that he or she feels comfortable and appreciated.
The goal of recruitment is to identify the best fit for both parties involved.
Orientation/Induction/Training: Orientations and inductions give new employees an idea of what working for the company entails. Oftentimes, these sessions are provided by managers to help educate workers on the corporate structure, policies, and procedures.
Pieces of training provide new hires with knowledge of safety guidelines and other basic information they need to know to perform their job duties properly.
Training is also a great way to introduce employees to coworkers who have already been onboarded.
